For everyone but the James Pattersons and Stephanie Meyers of the world, the book tour may soon go the way of the dodo.  Publishers just don’t have the resources these days to send mid-list authors out on tour.  Instead, promotion has increasingly become the responsibility of the authors themselves.  In fact, the only promotion an author is likely to get from a major publisher is the bare minimum outlined in her contract.

So how do you promote yourself when you’re both the publisher and the author?  Take a cue from traditional publishing and head out on tour… virtual tour.  The e-book tour is alive and well and it’s a must for anyone who is promoting a self-published book.

As bestselling romance author Shiloh Walker detailed in an article for RT Magazine, a blog tour is a great way to get the word out about a new release… and it doesn’t have to cost you anything!

In fact, you don’t even need to be promoting a book to go on tour.  With so much competition for e-book customers, you might give yourself a leg up if you already have an internet following before your book is even released.  One way to build a following is to go on tour and invite other writers to guest post on your own blog.  RWA’s special interest chapters can be a good way to meet fellow aspiring writers with whom you can form mutually beneficial relationships.

Just remember that blog touring takes a lot of time.  You don’t want to spend all of your time blogging or you’ll never have time to write the book!
